The power station is a Run-of-River scheme on river Ganga located upstream of the holy city of Hardwar and was commissioned in 1980-1981.There are 4 Kaplan vertical shaft turbines, Maximum operating head 32.5m Annual generation of the present design is about 725 MU which will increase to above 1000 MU after commissioning of the upstream Tehri Project due to the enhanced hydrological regulation in upper basins as well as upgrading works per current modern practice. For these reasons the time is being considered appropriate to undertake upgrading works so as to ensure the secure and reliable operation of the power station for the next 20-25 years. Objective of the CHUP(Chilla Hydro Upgrading Project) M&U program is to determine what plant equipment modifications and/or replacement are necessary to rehabilitate and upgrade the power to ensure dependable future generation and increase the station output to the highest economic level, keeping in view the following main objective: 
  
i) Rehabilitate and modernize the Chilla power station.

ii) Increase the Plant output, preferably by increasing the unit discharge and output.

iii) Provide hydraulic equipment that will be more resistant against erosion. 

iv) Provide new turbine runner with an improved cavitations behavior. 
  
v) Provide automatic trash rack cleaning machine. 

The scope of work pertaining to the Feasibility Study-DPR,as outlined in CCC (Canadian Commercial Corporation) contract with UJVNL is as follows:

i) Description of existing facilities.

ii) Hydrology and Hydraulics.

iii) Alternative solutions for Upgrading, including their identification, description and technical and economic assessment.
